After recently completing an extensive nationwide search for a new police chief, the Village of Tequesta plans to appoint Mr. Gus Medina from East Brunswick, New Jersey.

Mr. Medina will replace Chief Christopher Elg who retired after a 33-year career in law enforcement to accept an active duty assignment with the U.S. Coast Guard in Washington, DC.

Tequesta’s comprehensive, layered recruitment process involved a selection committee comprised of a neighboring police chief, a law enforcement representative and residents. The Village’s Human Resources Director qualified the initial respondents, while the selection committee interviewed and provided a short list of candidates to the Village Manager Michael Couzzo. Mr. Couzzo was delighted to have a seasoned pool of extremely well qualified, highly knowledgeable and skilled candidates from which to make a selection. Additionally, in an effort to compliment the Village’s selection efforts, the top three finalists participated in a Meet and Greet at Village Hall for residents and staff to meet and interact. The three then had lunch with the Senior Staff and attended a Senior Staff meeting.

Village Manager Couzzo choose Gus Medina as the Village’s next Police Chief, who is currently a Lt. for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Corruption Bureau. Mr. Medina stated he is, “Humbled and excited to be a part of the Tequesta family. I look forward to working with the community, Tequesta’s outstanding officers, and our partner law enforcement agencies.”

Mr. Medina began his law enforcement career as a New Jersey State Corrections Officer, before taking the position of Police Officer for the Newark Police Department. While in Newark, he served as an Officer and Sergeant before his promotion to Deputy Police Director of the Gangs, Guns and Narcotics Bureau. He then served as second in command as the Deputy Police Director overseeing the Administration Bureau.

The Village will begin finalizing an employment agreement with Mr. Medina who is tentatively scheduled to start work in April. Mayor Abby Brennan stated, “I am delighted to welcome Gus Medina into the Village of Tequesta to serve as our Chief of Police. His experience, credentials and enthusiasm will be a perfect fit in our community.”
