Golf Carts Safety

Recently we’ve been getting complaints of Golf Carts being driven on roadways and we wanted to make a post to clear up some of the confusion. Some laws apply to state of Florida, and some laws/rules apply to Village of Tequesta.

We’ve created a small FAQ to help address the questions we’ve been getting regarding use of golf carts and low speed vehicles. If you aren’t sure of a rule, call the police station at (561) 768-0500 and ask to speak with an officer. If you are in violation of these rules/regulations, your golf cart may be towed, and/or you may be given a citation.

Question 1 – Where can golf carts be operated?

For Village of Tequesta, the designated area is within the Country Club (Village Code 46-2)

Question 2 – What is the difference between “Golf Cart” and “Low Speed Vehicle”?

Low speed vehicles are registered four wheeled vehicles that can travel between 20-25 mph. They must be registered with DHSMV (have a license plate). They can travel on any municipal road where the speed limit is 35 mph or less.

Golf carts do not have to be registered, but they can only travel in golf cart designated areas. Driving golf carts in any undesignated area is a violation. Driver may be cited and golf cart towed at owner’s expense.

Question 3 – What are the rules for driving golf carts in Tequesta?

  • Golf cart operators must be a minimum of 16 years of age
  • hold and be in possession of a valid driver's license issued within the United States, at all times while operating a golf cart on public roads
  • The number of occupants in any golf cart being operated within the village shall be restricted to the number of seats on the golf cart.
  • No occupants of a golf cart shall stand at any time while the golf cart is in motion.
  • All golf carts must be equipped with efficient brakes, reliable steering apparatus, safe tires, a rearview mirror, and red reflectorized warning devices in both the front and rear.
  • Golf carts operated between sunset and sunrise on designated roads and streets shall also be properly equipped with headlights, brake lights, turn signals and a windshield.

Question 4 – Can I drive my golf cart on the sidewalk?

No. If that was the case, there would be no need for low-speed vehicles. Then everyone would drive their golf carts on the sidewalks. Sidewalks are designed for pedestrian use and bicycle use. Do not drive your vehicle on a sidewalk.

Question 5 – Do I have to follow traffic rules like red lights, crosswalks and stop signs?

Absolutely! When you are on the roadway (any vehicle you’re in) you must follow the rules of the road. You may be given a citation as if you were driving a vehicle if you don’t follow rules of the road.
