Tequesta Police Department: Special Needs Registry Program


The Tequesta Police Department is proud to participate in Florida’s Special Needs Registry Program under the “Protect Our Loved Ones” Act (CS/HB 1275 ) authorizes a local law enforcement agency to develop and maintain a database, known as a “Persons with Disabilities Registry,” of persons who may have certain developmental, psychological, or other disabilities or conditions, including but not limited to, autism spectrum disorder, Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia disorder, and Down syndrome, that may be relevant to interactions with law enforcement.

By enrolling in the program, families can ensure that law enforcement has critical details to respond effectively and compassionately during emergencies.

How the Special Needs Registry Works

  1. Enrollment: Families or caregivers complete an enrollment form, providing key details about their loved one, such as:
    • Medical conditions.
    • Communication abilities.
    • Likes, dislikes, triggers, and calming techniques.
    • Emergency contact information.
  2. Proactive Support: This information is securely stored and accessed by officers during critical situations to ensure safe and positive interactions.
  3. Emergency Assistance: If an enrolled individual goes missing or becomes involved in an emergency, officers are better equipped to provide the appropriate care and support.

Who Should Enroll?

The Special Needs Registry is ideal for individuals with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Alzheimer’s or dementia.
  • Down Syndrome or other cognitive disabilities.
  • Any condition that affects communication or behavior in high-stress situations.
